Stadium | From 1924 to 1966 Lecce played their home games at the Carlo Pranzo Stadium, which had a capacity of 12,000 and had wooden stands. It was eventually demolished and turned into a car park. In 1966 they moved to the Stadio Ettore Giardiniero – Via del Mare, their current home. The stadium was widely redeveloped in 1985 to celebrate Lecce’s first historical promotion to Serie A. Capacity was increased from 16,000 to 55,000 and at that time it was the 6th largest in Italy. In subsequent years, the stadium underwent restructuring. Capacity was reduced, dropping to 14,000 not least because Lecce had fallen to the third tier of Italian football and there was no need for such a big venue. With a return to Serie A, for the 2019-2020 campaign the Stadium was updated once more and its capacity increased to the current 31,559. |
Recent History | Lecce were founded in 1908, buy only achieved their first Serie A promotion in 1984-1985. They remained in the top flight just 1 season, but despite already being condemned to relegation, managed to influence the title fight with a famous 3-2 success over Roma, who eventually lost the Scudetto to Juventus. Since then life for a Lecce fan has been characterised by the highs of promotion and the lows of relegation. The truth is they have never managed to spend more than 3 straight seasons in the top flight. The 1988-1989 season was their best ever as they finished 9th. In 2004-2005 they had the second best attack in the league with Zdenek Zeman at the helm. At the end of the 2011-2012 season they were relegated to Serie B, but suffered the humiliation of being demoted to the Lega Pro due to match-fixing. Having lost 2 playoff finals in succession, they spent 6 years in the third tier, but subsequently obtained back-to-back promotions, returning to Serie A in 2019-2020. |
