Despite their defeat in the play-off semi-finals, 2018 was a largely successful season for the Seattle Sounders. A 2nd place finish in the Western Conference also saw them pose the best defence conceding just 37 goals. Only the New York Red Bulls overall conceded fewer than the Sounders so plenty for Brian Schmetzer to build on heading into the 2019 season. He will be delighted with the form of creative midfielder Nicolas Lodiero who sparkled in 2018 scoring 8 and assisting 16. Schmetzer hasn't tweaked too much but has added new players to enhance the squad. His most notable acquisition is defender Jonathan Campbell who arrives from Chicago Fire following a 2-year stint. He should bring plenty of experience and steel to an already strong defensive back line. The Sounders have also signed highly rated goalkeeper Troy Muse from Indiana Hooiser who is seen as one of the bright prospects. However, Schmetzer has lost club captain Osvaldo Alonso and full back Waylon Francis to MLS rivals and, while he might be disappointed, he will be confident his side can cope without those experienced figures.

Target

Will be competing on all fronts, challenging for top spot in the Western Conference as well as seeking a 2nd MLS Cup, the U.S Open Cup and Supporters' Shield. Progression in the play-offs would represent a good season but Schmetzer will fancy his side can surprise the rest.
