Atletico Madrid won a frantic UEFA Super Cup clash against city rivals Real Madrid in extra time. After taking a first-minute lead, they conceded twice to Real Madrid, before a late equaliser of their own brought about an extra half hour. Goals from Saul and Koke in the first period of extra time then settled the match.
Atletico Madrid got off to a great start when Diego Costa scored after 49 seconds, the quickest goal in the competition's history. He won a long ball himself and produced a great finish from an acute angle.
Atletico followed that early goal up with 15 or so minutes of high pressing and pressure on Real Madrid. Eventually, though, they had to drop back and Real Madrid started to keep the ball better.
Julen Lopetegui's side started to threaten, first coming close with a Marco Asensio backheel and then equalising when Karim Benzema finished a Gareth Bale cross at the half hour mark.
Real Madrid finished the first half stronger, before Atletico found fresh impetus at the beginning of the second half. However, a penalty was awarded to Real Madrid in the 63rd minute for a Juanfran handball, which Sergio Ramos converted.
Real Madrid were in complete control for the next 15 minutes and even brought on Dani Ceballos for Casemiro to try to pass their way to the finish line. But Juanfran redeemed himself, winning the ball back in the 79th minute, feeding Angel Correa, who in turn set up a Costa equaliser.
Besides one Marcelo chance in the very last seconds, there wasn't much more action before the full-time whistle and the game headed to extra time.
A special goal then broke the deadlock again. Thomas Partey had been brought on to provide more effort in the centre of the park and won the ball high up the pitch, before showing creativity to flick the ball to Saul Niguez in the eighth minute of extra time, with the Spaniard volleying an excellent goal.
With Real Madrid forced to chase the game, another chance opened up for Atletico and Koke slotted away, giving them a two-goal lead which they defended.
In terms of drawing conclusions from this match, it should be kept in mind that this was a final and a derby and that it was ultimately decided by fine margins. But it did show that Real Madrid have some defensive issues to solve, while it showed Atletico are an attacking force and not overly reliant on Antoine Griezmann, who could only play an hour.
