Stadium | Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia (opened 1928) Capacity: 21,300 Pitch Size: 105m x 68m Having originally played their official games in via Maglio del Lotto, between 1914 and 1918, and subsequently at the Clementina ground, Atalanta found their new home in 1928. The Bergamo local authority built the Mario Brumana Stadium out of the ashes of the Borgo Santa Caterina hippodrome. Over the years, the stadium has changed name several times, from Brumana to Comunale and, then, Atleti Azzurri d’Italia. It has often been redeveloped, including the removal of an athletics track which used to surround the pitch. In 2017 Atalanta eventually bought the ground from the council for 8 million Euros and, in the summer 2019, they started major reconstruction in order to meet the UEFA requirements. Now known as the Gewiss Stadium, Atalanta will be able to play their European games in Bergamo once again. In the interim they have had to travel to Reggio Emilia and Milan for such matches. |
Recent History | Known as the Queen of the “provincial clubs”, Atalanta are the team with the longest Serie A presence among those not based in a regional capital. After some anonymous campaigns, they have raised their ambitions since former player turned industrialist Antonio Percassi took over in 2010. He had already been President of the club in the early 1990s. With coach Gian Piero Gasperini at the helm since 2016, Atalanta have suddenly become one of the protagonists of the Italian football. After qualifying for European competition again after almost 30 years, in 2018-2019 Atalanta achieved their best ever Serie A finish. 3rd place saw them qualify for the Champions League for the first time, while also playing their 4th Coppa Italia final. |
