Stadium | Atlético Madrid moved stadium in 2017. After 51 years at the Estadio Vicente Calderón between 1966 and 2017, they moved ground and also moved to the other side of Madrid. It wasn’t just a case of moving a few metres down the road, as their new Estadio Wanda Metropolitano is 15km away. This has led to a slight change in the demographics of the fanbase, but attendances have been up at the new ground and the 68,000 venue is often full. One of the impressive things about Atlético Madrid’s move to the new stadium is the way they were able to maintain their most vocal support, as the fans who stood behind the south goal at the Estadio Vicente Calderón do likewise at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano and create a similarly impressive atmosphere to spur the team on. The stadium is modern and one of the best in the world and it has already hosted a Champions League final, doing so in 2019. |
Recent History | Atlético Madrid’s recent history has been so impressive. Considering that this club was relegated to the second division at the end of the 1999/2000 season, they’ve come a long way. After returning to the top flight and establishing themselves as a top-half club, things really improved with the hire of Diego Simeone in 2011, Since Simeone took over, they’ve reached two Champions League finals in 2014 and 2016 and won the league title in 2013/14, as well as claiming several other more minor trophies. This really is a golden age for Atlético Madrid. |
