Stadium | Dijon FCO was founded in 1998. They have played all their games in the Stade Gaston-Gérard. Conceived as a multi-sports centre, it was inaugurated in 1934 as Parc Municipal des Sports. In 1969 the stadium was re-named after the former controversial Mayor of the City, Gaston Gérard who had initiated the construction process. With the passing of time, the Stadium was exclusively dedicated to Dijon FCO and football. As the venue aged, it was crying out for an excuse for redevelopment. This came on occasion of the team’s ascent to professional football, between 2007 and 2010 and with that, far reaching improvements were made. New works took place between 2014 and 2017 with the historic Marathon grandstand being demolished and replaced by a new structure, the Caisse d’Epargne. With that addition, the Stadium’s capacity increased to 19,000. |
Recent History | Dijon FCO came into existence in 1998 thanks to the merger of the two main clubs of the city, Dijon FC and Cercle Sportif Laique Dijonnais. Such a union had been proposed by the local newspaper, Bien Public, in order to give Dijon a realistic chance to be a protagonist in French football. Dijon FCO started from the 4th tier, CFA. Within a couple of seasons they had reached the Championnat National and won their first title as Amateur France Champions. Rudy Garcia was the architect of their first Ligue 2 season in 2004-2005 and their historic run in the Coupe de France 2003-2004, when they lost to Berrichonne in the semifinals. In 2010-2011 the club were promoted to Ligue 1 with Patrice Carteron as head coach. Their top flight status would be short lived however, and was followed by relegation the following season. It took 4 more years before they were promoted again, but the threat of relegation remains a constant one and doesn’t look like going away any time soon. |
