Stadium | Espanyol are based in Barcelona and they’ve played all over the city. Since 2009, though, they’ve had a settled home at the newly built RCDE Stadium, a modern 41,000-capacity stadium. It’s rarely full, but it is a quality venue and they’ve little by little made it feel like home. The problem is that it’s probably a little too large for the size of the Espanyol fanbase and they are regularly towards the bottom of rankings for percentage occupancy of seats. Logically, therefore, the atmosphere isn’t always as loud and passionate as in some of the other stadiums of Spain. |
Recent History | Espanyol have historically been a top-tier club. They have taken part in all but four of the LaLiga seasons in history. After the never-relegated teams of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Athletic Club, Espanyol are tied with Valencia for the next highest number of top-flight seasons. They’ve had an uninterrupted stay in the top tier since 1995 and have even won the Copa del Rey twice since then. For a lot of their history, they’ve been a mid-table club yet they were able to return to continental competition by finishing seventh in 2018/19, returning to Europe for the first time since they were in the 2007 UEFA Cup final, which they lost on penalties to Sevilla. The club was taken over by Chinese businessman Chen Yansheng in 2016 and he stated that he wanted to reach the Champions League within three years. That didn’t happen, but the club has made significant progress and did make the aforementioned return to the Europa League. |
