Stadium | Granada play their games at the Nuevo Estadio de Los Cármenes. As the “nuevo” part of the name suggests, this is a new ground and it replaced the old Estadio Los Cármenes, which they called home from 1934 to 1995. The current ground opened in that year in the middle of the Nineties and they’ve little by little carried out some redevelopment work to reach a capacity of 19,000. It is a comfortable stadium with closed corners and one that the Spanish national team have visited regularly. Partly because of the strong support for the national team in the region and partly because of the high-quality facilities, it is one of the venues in the rotation for Spain games. |
Recent History | After spending all of the Eighties and Nineties and Noughties outside of Spain’s top division, Granada finally returned to the top flight by securing promotion in 2011. They then stayed for six years in a row, always finding themselves in the relegation battle and always able to survive. However, a disastrous 2016/17 campaign that ended with Tony Adams as the coach and with a squad that didn’t seem to care, Granada were relegated back down. This came at a time when there was a change in ownership and the club was sold by the Pozzo family that also owned Udinese and Watford and it was purchased by Chinese businessman Jiang Lizhang. This brought about a complete culture change at the club and they improved their workings off the field and on it, helped by the hire of Diego Martínez as their new coach. Under him, they secured promotion back to LaLiga and started the 2019/20 campaign excellently, even sitting top of the table after the 10th match day. |
