Stadium | King Power Stadium (opened 2002) Capacity: 32,312 Pitch Size: 105m x 68 m Leicester City played their home games at Filbert Street between 1891 & 2002. In the late 1990s the desire to have a bigger, more modern facility in which to play football caused Leicester City to look at various options. These included a rebuild at Filbert Street to moving to a new location. Having decided to move and build a completely new stadium, Leicester City endured a series of set backs. Relegation from the Premier League couldn't have come at a worse time as debts mounted and the club eventually went into receivership. These events saw City lose control of their stadium and had to lease the ground from the new owners. In 2013 the new Thai owners of the club would bring the stadium back in-house. |
Recent History | Leicester City's recent history could not be more spectacular. In 2008/09 they won League 1. Over the following seasons Nigel Pearson would manage the club, leave and then return in the 2011/12 season. Having taken the team to the play offs in 2009/10, he did so again in 2011/12, both times ending in failure to gain promotion. In the 2013/14 season The Foxes won the Championship and with it promotion to the Premier League. Cast as the classic promotion, relegation team Leicester City went close to living up to that name when they spectacularly avoided relegation in 2014/15. The 2015/16 season began in controversy. Pearson was sacked after a series of public clashes with the board and the humiliating publication of a racist sex tape involving his son whilst on a pre-season tour of Thailand. Claudio Ranieri was bought in as manager and by many fans was seen as a step in the wrong direction for the club. And so it was with this background that the most extraordinary Premier League tale ever began. Building on the foundations that Pearson had laid and spurred on by the magic of Riyad Mahrez, the invaluable Ngolo Kante & Jamie Vardy's goals, Leicester City won the Premier League having been 5000/1 at the start of the campaign. |
