Stadium | Sampdoria came into being following the merger of two historic clubs, Sampierdarenese and Andrea Doria. The club plays their home at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, which is also home to Genoa. The stadium was inaugurated in 1911 and is one of the oldest in the country. When it was built, it had a capacity of 20,000 but this was increased over time, reaching its peak in the 1980s, when it could host more than 57,000 supporters. The stadium was entirely rebuilt for the 1990 World Cup and included the installation of two large screens. In subsequent years the Luigi Ferraris underwent further renovation. A key goal was to meet UEFA stadium standards, an achievement that allowed Sampdoria to take part in the 2010-2011 Champions League playoffs. As a result the arena’s capacity has been reduced to 37,000. |
Recent History | The golden years for Sampdoria were during the Paolo Mantovani era. He was President of the club between 1979 and 1993, the year he died. His teams won 3 Coppa Italias, 1 Italian Super Cup, 1 Serie A title, 1 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and lost to Barcelona the Champions League final in 1991-1992. Since Mantovani’s death, Samp have only managed to win 1 further piece of silverware, an Italian Cup, in 1993-1994, when his son was President of the club. What followed saw them achieve mixed results on the pitch. Relegation to Serie B came in 1998-1999 and 2010-2011, whilst in contrast, they managed a Coppa Italia final in 2008-2009 and a 4th place finish in Serie A in 2009-2010. The club was acquired by the film producer Massimo Ferrero in 2014. In the following campaign they finished 7th and succeeded in qualifying for the Europa League qualifying rounds. After that there was a spell of mediocrity and once again there is talk of the club being sold on. |
