Stadium | The Estadio de la Cerámica, as Villarreal’s stadium is known as for sponsorship reasons, has a capacity of 25,000 and is regularly full, which is impressive considering the town where the club is based only has a population of 50,000. Yet they attract supporters from across the Castellón region. Opened in 1923, it is one of the oldest grounds in Spain. There has been a lot of redevelopment over the years, not least when they started to qualify for European competitions, but it has retained a lot of the original architecture. |
Recent History | Villarreal had never been in LaLiga until 1998, but since then they’ve established themselves as a top-flight team. Not only that, but they’ve become a club that regularly competes in Europe. This is mostly down to owner and president Fernando Roig. He was formerly a Valencia shareholder, but took over at Villarreal in 1997/98 and since then they’ve been a top team. With an excellent academy and a great scouring department, Villarreal are able to field young up-and-coming stars and to win with them before selling them on for huge profits. This has been their business model for some time and it has turned them into a regular top-half-of-the-table side. |
