Ollie Palmer’s move to AFC Wimbledon might have been expected but is still a real blow. He finished last season as leading goalscorer with 14 goals and played a crucial part in their campaign. Panutche Camara’s switch to Plymouth Argyle and Bez Lubala's move to Blackpool complete a trio of departures which will hit the Red Devils hard. Head coach John Yems will struggle to replace those players with similar quality and has plenty of work to do in the transfer market. Yems was something of a surprise appointment following the departure of Gabriele Cioffi but he clearly knows the club and created an exciting attacking team which enjoyed an excellent home record before the Covid-19 pandemic struck. Owner Ziya Eren has adopted a transfer policy which has continued this summer with several young players, who have yet to prove themselves in the Football League, signed on long-term deals. It remains to be seen whether it will bear fruit. Yems has brought in the experienced Tony Craig whilst the evergreen Dannie Bulman will continue for another season. Lewis Young will be hoping for an injury-free season whilst Ashley Nadesan will be looking to fill the void left by Palmer following a stop-start campaign last time out.

Target

Top-half. There is plenty of cause for optimism following Yems embryonic start in the job and if he can replace Palmer’s goals, they should be looking up rather than down.
