Michael Flynn has been the most important figure at Newport County for more than three years and none more so than this summer The Exiles remain under Trust control and finances are tightly controlled. That financial acumen is crucial as clubs are hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. It would be different without Flynn, who has twice guided the club to Wembley in both league and cup. Back-to-back cup runs have brought in the money which is keeping the club afloat. With that credit in the bank, last season’s slide down the table shouldn’t rest heavily on Flynn’s shoulders. The premature end to the campaign will have come as a relief to many in South Wales and the Exiles have been able to regroup during the close season. Flynn brings continuity and stability having ensured his key players were already tied to contracts, with only Scot Bennett the exception and he has now signed a new deal. Striker Ryan Taylor is the only notably addition to the squad and should fit neatly into Flynn’s preferred style of play. Mark O’Brien’s enforced retirement due to heart surgery is the only real blow the Exiles have faced so far this simmer.

Target

Play-offs. Flynn has twice overseen failed play-off pushes and he will be hoping it’s third time lucky this time around.
