Football Season Review

№4: FC Thun

Thun have gotten everyone used to punching above their weight, as they keep challenging for European places despite having one of the smallest budgets in the league. This season was no different, as the Oberlanders kept playing the dynamic brand of football that they have become known for and enjoyed a particularly good first half of the season, with only Young Boys doing better than them in the first half of the campaign. They also enjoyed an excellent Swiss Cup run, as they reached the final of the competition, only to be edged out by Basel in the final. They seemed to be running out of steam near the end of the season, with their cup participation and the injury situation being possible explanations. Skipper Dennis Hediger missed nearly the entire second half of the season with an injury, while several other players, including key winger Matteo Tosetti, had time on the sidelines. Thun slowed down near the end of the campaign as a consequence and were out of the European places going into the final round, but edged out Sion to clinch European football. They will nonetheless be disappointed, as they failed to finish third despite spending nearly the entire campaign inside the top three. Moreover, they were piped to third by Lugano only on goal difference.
