Football Season Review

№20: Rayo Vallecano

Rayo Vallecano are going straight back down to the second division and they do so having finished bottom of LaLiga. A poor summer of planning for the top tier ultimately cost them and they can’t have any complaints about going down. Although there were a few impressive Rayo Vallecano performances scattered across the season, they were too few and far between and they simply weren’t consistent enough. They went through two coaches as Michel, the man who had got them promoted, was replaced by former coach Paco Jemez for the final 10 rounds. But Rayo Vallecano’s problem wasn’t a coaching one. It was a talent one. There just wasn’t sufficient talent in this squad after a poor summer of preparation for first-division football. Even Raul De Tomas, their top scorer and their best player by a mile, didn’t arrive until August 24th, after the season had already started. Rayo Vallecano will need to be smart as they prepare for the second division because they almost suffered a relegation to the third tier the last time they were relegated. Recruitment was poor in the summer of 2018 and they can’t afford to make the same mistake in the summer of 2019.

Player of the Season: Raul de Tomas
