Football Season Review

№4: Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham had a historic season that saw them not only achieve a top 4 finish in the league, but also Spurs announced themselves as major international players with the reaching of the team’s first ever Champions League final. Up until Boxing Day Spurs even managed to keep up the pace of Man City and Liverpool with their 15 wins in the opening 19 rounds. Tottenham actually had just 1 draw in the league all season and it was the few narrow defeats that crept in here and there that proved damaging. The team’s pace dropped in February and March when focusing on the Champions League run brought a single point from 5 rounds in the Premier League, and this ended Tottenham’s title aspirations. The other thing that affected the results were yet again constant injuries to key players, with both Alli and Kane having a third season in a row ruined by injury issues. This added to the fact that Pocchetino did not sign new players in the summer or in the winter stretched the resources. Moura had a solid season and very good performances while Kane was out, but probably the most impressive player was Korean Son. He singlehandedly won Tottenham 6 league matches with his late goals, and in general was very important in attack all season. After being quiet last year Tottenham are expected to be very active on the transfer market this summer, and if they add enough depth and quality to the ranks with their new stadium ready, and confidence built by reaching the Champions League final, who knows how high the Lilywhites will be aiming next season.

Player of the Season: Heung-Min Son
