FC Twente's financial problems dictated the news in Enschede back in 2015 and the club is still paying the price for that. The mismanagement eventually resulted in a huge punishment as FC Twente weren't allowed to enter European football for three seasons. This did affect the club immensely but the Enschede side bounced back later on. The new directors were able to cope with the outcome and they actually formed a more than decent squad for the 2016/2017 season. 7th spot would have been enough to enter the Europa League play-offs but the punishment prevented them from entering the final weeks of the season. That finishing spot however was actually better than expected and the fans were satisfied with the result. The Enschede team won't be able to push for Europa League participation next year but a top 8 finish will be the main mission once again. There isn't a big budget available to buy well-known names but the staff already added some promising signings to the squad. This was necessary as regulars like Mateusz Klich, Kamohelo Mokotjo, Bersant Celina and Enes Unal left the club after the season. Enal's departure especially will affect the team as his leadership in attack pushed the performances to a higher level. The Turkish striker produced 18 goals and it will be difficult now to add a decent replacement to the squad. Players like Alexander Laukart, Jorn Brondeel, Tom Boere, Haris Vuckic and Marko Kvasina could fill the gaps but they have to make a name for themselves first which could be tougher than expected. These players have potential but manager René Hake will have to find a way to form a new system with all these new arrivals. The fans can't expect a top 5 finish but FC Twente will be a top 8 contender again.

Target

A finishing spot between 5th and 8th.
