The immediate future seemed rather promising for Oldham at the end of the previous season. They managed to escape the drop following a superb renaissance under John Sheridan, and looked towards the new season with optimism, hoping for their new manager to turn them into at least a top half side. However, that optimism did not last long, as the club, while rejecting initial interest for their manager, eventually caved in and allowed Sheridan to speak to Notts County, who named them new boss at the end of May. His departure sparked a mess exodus of players, which resulted in only six senior members of the last season's squad remaining at the club. Needless to say, the Latics needed to bring in a whole new squad during the summer and have done so, but none of their summer signings looks particularly eye-catching. Moreover, their board, having previously struck gold with Lee Johnson, opted to make another stab in the dark with their managerial selection, as they opted to appoint Steve Robinson, the former assistant manager of Motherwell and the Northern Ireland national team, who has no previous experience of managing a side by himself. Needless to say, the atmosphere surrounding the club is one of dejection and fear going into the new season, as the Latics are set to start their campaign with a rookie manager and a squad of mediocre players who are not used to playing together.

Target

They are a big unknown going into the new season but, given Robinson's lack of experience, the mediocrity of their squad and the manner in which was assembled, they look like one of the prime candidates to go down.
