Wrexham enjoyed their best season in recent memory over the previous 12 months but at the end of it they are still playing their football in the Conference and now the aim for the Welsh club is to make the big step and return to the Football League. They were in a sense very unlucky last season as a tally of 98 points proved not enough for automatic promotion only because of the simply unstoppable form of Fleetwood. By the time of the play-offs, the Dragons had lost their momentum and were beaten on aggregate by Luton. Still, they played superb football and player-manager Andy Morrell won countless fans with the way he motivated the team. The aim of the manager was to keep the team relatively unchanged for the new season. He succeeded in that in a sense but the loss of talented defender Nathaniel Knight Percival is a serious one and it remains to be seen how Martin Riley fills the gap left by him. Mathias Pogba and Jake Speight jumped ship too and the lack of alternatives up front is a bit worrying. Nevertheless, Wrexham remains a very good team who can keep the ball and defend very well under pressure. They developed a knack of getting results when not the best team on the pitch and garnering this spirit and grit once again will be vital to make them contenders. However, it is hard to see repeating the feats of last season and a place just inside the play-offs may be most realistic.
