Charlton enter their third season in League 1 with an inexperienced manager at the helm following Chris Powell’s appointment back in January, and the ex-England player has a lot to prove after an unsuccessful start to his tenure. The Addicks slipped down the table following his appointment and finished well short of the top six. Powell will be under immediate pressure to deliver results and once again the Addicks will enter the new season with a very different looking squad to that which completed the last. Powell has seen several first team players leave, including all three of his main central midfielders, while he has also made a host of summer signings. Danny Hollands and Rhoys Wiggins have joined from Bournemouth and are likely to be important players, but Powell will need to make a few more signings to make his side competitive. For the last two seasons Charlton have started very strongly, topping the table early on only to fall back. This time around Powell will be hoping for another good start as any less could see the supporters quickly turn on him.

Target

Charlton need to at least make the play-offs this season and Powell may find it very tough. He will need to learn quickly and get his new look side to gel or he will soon have the fans on his back. Last season’s performances have left him little headroom for mistakes.
