After spending just a season in the bottom tier Wycome Wanderers are back in League 1 and will be looking to make their stay a more lengthy one than last time, where they lasted just a season. The Chairboys were promoted on the final day of last season and will be amongst the early season favourites for the drop. However, promoted sides have often done well in League 1 over recent years, suggesting the gap between the two divisions is not as wide as most other leagues. Manager Gary Waddock has been busy strengthening his team over the summer, raiding his old club Aldershot as well as bringing in several players with League 1 experience. His aim will be to keep the side out of trouble, but realistically any sort of survival will be a good achievement for him. Wycombe were solid in all areas last season, although they only scraped promotion by a point, and Waddock has not made wholesale changes to his side so far, suggesting he has faith in the bulk of his team. However, they lacked a prolific goalscorer, with 14 goals the highest total amongst the squad, and it is this area that Waddock needs to strengthen if they are to avoid the drop.

Target

Wycombe only lasted a season in League 1 last time and Waddock’s remit will simply be to survive and build on that. Anything more would be a huge bonus.
