Austria spent the most of the recent seasons battling to be the "best of the rest" and finish second, therefore making Champions League qualifiers.
They had a disappointing 2017/18 campaign, but went into this one with optimism after improving under caretaker Thomas Letsch, who was ultimately given their managerial job on a permanent basis.
However, the decision to give the job to the unproven Letsch has proven to have been a poor one in hindsight, as the Violets ended up having a rather disappointing campaign. Their inability to perform on their travels was particularly striking, with Austria struggling to score goals on their travels and their performances being even worse than the results suggested.
Letsch managed to last until midway through the spring season, but the club eventually decided that they needed a new direction and opted to name Robert Ibersberger as their temporary manager.
Ibertsberger initially struggled but managed to pick the Violets' form enough with time. This was enough for them to avoid finishing at the bottom of Champions Group and therefore qualify for Europe, but Austria's targets are obviously far greater than that.
Their board have a big decision to make over the summer and the Violets will definitely be expected to deliver a push for a second-place finish next time around.
