After a brilliant campaign in 2016, the Colorado Rapids will be looking to build on that performance this season, and potentially even go further. The Rapids were without a doubt the surprise package of the year, finishing in second position in both the Western Conference standings and the overall standings. Conceding just 32 goals all season, Colorado would have by far the best defensive record in the league, which was backed up by their incredible home form, in which they remained unbeaten all season. Pablo Mastroeni has lost a few men heading into this one, although the majority of last season’s team remain with a few minor additions. With the Rapids playing well but not scoring an awful lot last year, the signing of veteran striker Alan Gordon from the Los Angeles Galaxy could prove to be vital, with the gritty forward known for his fair share of goals. The signing of Manchester City youngster Bismark Adjei-Boateng could also add some extra quality in midfield, with the young Ghanaian proving himself in the Norwegian top division last season. Jermaine Jones’ move to LA Galaxy is perhaps the most high profile loss for the Rapids but, given his suspension and injury issues last season, it appears as though Colorado have enough to cope with his absence. Marco Pappa’s departure could also prove to be an issue, with the side from Commerce City struggling for width at times last year. With 3 of their first 4 games taking place in front of their own fans, Pablo Mastroeni’s side have a great opportunity to get a quick start to the season. They take on the New England Revolution on the opening weekend.

Target

If they can replicate last season's form then a top end finish is definitely on the cards, a solid playoff position will however do just fine.
