After making the playoffs for only the first time in 2015, Toronto FC would go on to have an amazing run in the 2016 campaign, going all the way to the MLS Cup Final. While Greg Vanney’s men would eventually lose on penalties, they were brilliant for the majority of the year and will hope to build on that this season. The reds would keep a total of 13 clean sheets last year, finishing the season with the join second best defence in the league. With their solid defence, and with 27 joint goals shared between both Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore, Toronto would prove to be tough opponents all throughout the season, and they will look to continue that during 2017. Given last season’s fantastic run, it is understandable that Greg Vanney has been rather reluctant to tinker with his squad too much during pre-season. A few signings have however been made which could improve the Canadian team. Former Barcelona man, Victor Vasquez joins the team from Cruz Azul, and will be hoping to contribute in the centre of the park. Left back Chris Mavinga will also add further depth to the side, with the former Liverpool man adding some real quality at the back. After having such as solid defence last year, the departures of Damien Perquis, Mark Bloom, and Josh Williams will certainly hurt Toronto’s depth at the back. Will Johnson’s move to Orlando City SC also sees them lose an extremely experienced and versatile midfielder, who played an integral part in last season’s team. With the reds starting their campaign this year with 3 away games on the bounce, they will have to remain resilient in the early stages, and hope to pick up some key points on the road.

Target

After last season's performance, Toronto will most definitely be looking to challenge for the title once more.
