Dominic Kinnear’ San Jose Earthquakes had a terrible season in 2016, failing to make the playoffs for the fourth season running, and finishing in ninth position in the Western Conference table. Scoring just 32 goals all season, the side from California would average less than 1 goal per game, which was perhaps the main reason behind their problems. Defensively the Earthquakes weren’t too bad, conceding only 40 goals all season. It’s clear that San Jose therefore need to strengthen their forward options if they want to succeed in 2017. In terms of striking additions, Dominic Kinnear has so far brought in 3 strikers who could make an impact up top. Olmes Garcia arrives from Real Salt Lake with a bundle of Major League Soccer experience, while Danny Hoesen and Marco Urena both arrive from Europe looking to help add to the goals. Jahmir Hyka will provide some depth to the Earthquakes’ midfield, with Florian Jungwirth adding even more quality. After impressing on loan last season, Alberto Quintero will not be returning to the club after deciding to join a team in Peru. Designated player Innocent Emeghara will also be leaving the team on a free transfer after what ultimately proved to be an incredibly disappointing spell with the club. With two away games on the bounce, the first against Montreal this weekend, San Jose will hope to kick start their campaign with some positive performances, with Chris Wondolowski of course key to many of their hopes this season. After putting in a brilliant display throughout last season, David Bingham is also one to watch for the 2017 campaign. The young stopper was key to the success of San Jose’s defence last year, and will once again prove to be vital.

Target

After missing out on the playoffs for the past 4 seasons, simply reaching them would be an improvement, although that is still a big ask.
