Erzgebirge were hugely successful last season where they even got close to the top 3 in January and February, but in the end the main goal of staying clear of any danger was more than achieved and, past the COVID-break, the team simply cruised. Effective forward actions and great home form, both with and without fans, main contributors to the strong campaign. To balance the wage bill the Violets offloaded many (sp) players in off-season and also decided not to make Rasmussen’s stay permanent. They replaced the solid centre-back well, though, with Dynamo’s captain Ballas signed and ready to reunite with his ex-teammate Gonther in the heart of the back line. Left-back Gaetan Bussmann also useful new addition, with all other transfer activity so far mostly to create depth. With all of the regulars in midfield and attack still in the squad the outlook for next season is good and Erzgebirge should continue playing fluid and very attractive football. Using the flanks extensively and keeping their inner midfielders deep to protect the back line should again be features of Schuster’s tactics. Erzgebirge’s biggest strength is their form at home and, if again points are quickly accumulated in Aue the atmosphere will be relaxed, allowing everyone to perform at their best level. The main weakness right now is the lack of depth and quality on the wings, where just 2 typical wide forwards are on the books right now. Also Jan Hochscheidt no longer having same speed as in years past, with talented player turning 34 in October.

Target

Solid mid-table finish is the goal and this looks achievable goal. Unlikely to have enough consistency to challenge for promotion.
