Football Season Review

№15: Aston Villa

Aston Villa finished the season with a disappointing three nil defeat at White Hart Lane against sixth placed Tottenham Hotspur. It was their twentieth defeat of a poor season. Paul Lambert's side had only a game or two previously secured their place in the top flight for next season. In that respect it was a nothing game for the Claret and Blue. Villa started the season reasonably well but before long they found themselves struggling in the bottom half of the table. In the end they finished fifteenth, the same place as the previous season. Just like last season, they were again just five points clear of the bottom three. Home form in particular was very weak in 2013/14 and the team were regularly jeered and booed by their own fans at Villa Park. Lambert was confident in pre-season that his young side would show clear signs of improvement and the Scotsman had no problems talking about a top half finish. Obviously that never happened, but more worryingly it never at all looked possible or on the cards. It is very difficult to highlight how or where the team has improved over the last two years. Christian Benteke remained crucial to the team, but the striker spent a lot of time on the sidelines with various injuries. Midfielder Fabian Delph was without doubt the most consistent performer at the club. Club captain Ron Vlaar was often a rock at centre back and when injured Villa looked a much weaker defensive unit. Club owner Randy Lerner confirmed shortly after the Tottenham game that the club is up for sale. Lambert has stated he is staying at the club. A number of his recent signings have not made the grade, so there could be quite a few players on their way out over the next few months. The likes of Delph and Vlaar have been attracting interest, and with the future of the club uncertain it would be no surprise they were sold on for a profit.
