Football Season Review

№16: Hull City

Hull City ended their season at Wembley with a three two defeat in the FA Cup Final against Arsenal. The Tigers were two up early in the game but were unable to hang on and conceded twice in normal time before conceding a third in extra-time. James Chester and Curtis Davies were the Hull goalscorers. Prior to that, Steve Bruce's side lost out by two goals to nil in their final Premier League game of the season against fifth placed Everton. Having been promoted from the Championship last season, survival in the top flight was the name of the game for Hull. The Tigers went through the season without ever really being in much danger of the drop. Once they progressed to the FA Cup Final, their league form took a nose dive, but by that stage they were more or less already safe. They finished the season sixteenth in the table, losing four of their last five league games. In the end they were just four points clear of the drop zone. All things considered, it was a very satisfactory season for Hull. They remain in the Premier League against the odds and had the bonus of a day out at Wembley. Bruce added strikers Shane Long and Nikica Jelavic in the January transfer window and their goals proved crucial over the coming months. Prior to that, Hull were simply not scoring enough. In total they managed just thirty eight league goals all season over thirty eight games. Curtis Davis and Tom Huddlestone were key players in defense and midfield. David Meyler was somewhat of an unsung hero. His work rate and effort never catches the headlines but the Irishman is always one of the first names on the team sheet. Hull will no doubt enjoy their European football next season, but the bread and butter of the league will remain very much the priority. The target will once again be survival. Bruce will be remaining at the club and needs to add numbers and quality to the squad over the coming months.
