Football Season Review

№16: Colorado Rapids

A choppy season largely defined by managerial changes. No wins in the first 11 games of the season saw Colorado trailing. More erratic form before Robin Fraser took over, guiding Rapids to 5 wins from last 7 games, but the turnaround came too late for the club to make play offs. A strong attack was let down by weak defence, with 63 goals conceded, the 3rd most in the league. But 58 goals scored was joint third most in the league, mostly distributed between Kei Kamara and Diego Rubio. Fate was decided on last day with a defeat on the road to LAFC. Despite a poor start, Fraser came close to bringing his side into the play offs. Attacking prospect Andre Shinyashiki was MLS Rookie of the Year and gives Colorado something to look forward to along with other promising youngsters like Jonathan Lewis and Sam Vines. Keegan Rosenberry continues to impress. Veteran goalkeeper Tim Howard’s retirement gives the club something to ponder. Three open designated player slots give Colorado significant room for manoeuvre with regards to new signings. Fraser showed he has what it takes to organise and motivate a team at MLS level, but he will have to demonstrate his ability in the off-season in terms of player acquisitions and a strong pre-season if Colorado are to reach their potential.
