Sheffield Wednesday missed out on promotion for a second straight year having made the play-offs. This time it was Huddersfield who ended their dream with a play-off semi-final win on penalties. It is difficult to say that Wednesday deserved promotion though, and arguably they were slightly worse than the season before when they missed out in the final. Carlos Carvalhal will hope this is third time lucky but it has been a far from memorable summer so far. He has added just George Boyd to his squad and although players that are departing are only back-ups, it is difficult to see how they will progress without additional arrivals. Fernando Forestieri has failed to push on despite being regarded as the club's best player and it is certainly an important year for him to push on. Carvalhal has an abundance of attacking resources but really seems to be lacking at the back. There appears to be a lack of defensive options even though the first choice back four looks good, injuries throughout the season may cause one or two problems. In keeper Keiren Westwood though they do have one of the best around and will hope he can win them games alone. Hillsborough has been a happy ground recently for Wednesday and there is plenty of enthusiasm from fans with good crowds. They will expect to continue their good form at home throughout the campaign.

Target

Wednesday will hope they can finally win promotion back to the Premier League. it appears to be difficult given the current squad but one or two more signings, especially at the back, may well change things.
